Kadi is Kenya's most beloved card game — a fast, strategic shedding game played with a standard 54-card deck. Whether you grew up playing on dusty verandas in Nairobi or you're discovering it for the first time, this guide covers everything you need to know.
Kadi is played with 2–4 players using a standard deck of 52 cards plus 2 jokers (54 total). Each player is dealt 4 cards. The remaining cards form the draw pile, and one card is turned face-up to start the discard pile.
The goal: Be the first to get rid of all your cards. But you must declare "Niko Kadi!" (I'm at Kadi) when you're down to your last two cards — fail to do so and you'll face a penalty.
On your turn, play a card that matches the top of the discard pile by either:
If you can't play, you must draw one card from the pile. If the drawn card is playable, you may play it immediately.
Kadi's depth comes from its special cards. Each rank has a unique power:
Next player must draw 2 cards — unless they have a 2 of their own to stack on top, passing the penalty forward (now 4 cards).
Next player draws 3 cards. Can be stacked with another 3. In classic rules, 2s and 3s cannot be mixed (same-rank stacking only).
The most devastating card. Next player draws 5 cards. Can only be blocked by another Joker in classic mode. Jokers are color-matched: red joker plays on red suits, black on black. In 4-joker mode, each joker is suited.
Wild card — play it on anything. You choose which suit the next player must follow. A pair of Aces can demand a specific card!
Skips the next player's turn entirely. Can be blocked by another Jack.
Reverses the direction of play. In a 2-player game, this effectively gives you another turn (kickback).
After playing an 8 or Queen, you play again immediately — it's a "question" you answer yourself with your next card.
When someone plays a penalty card (2, 3, or Joker) against you, you have options:
Stacking Mayhem mode: Allows cross-stacking — you can play a 3 on a 2, or a 2 on a Joker, combining penalties into massive draw piles!
When you're down to two cards, you must declare "Niko Kadi!" before playing your penultimate card. This warns other players that you're about to win.
